The JOHARI Window

The JOHARI Window is a helpful tool for understanding that we all have Open, Blind, Hidden, & Unknown areas of our lives. Additional short video resource HERE

The Johari Window can be adapted into a Biblical discipleship and renewal framework, so it’s still a personal growth tool but deeply rooted in Scripture. It’s great for linking it to the Life Coaching that I provide for those seeking a Biblical foundation. Considering blind spots, unknown areas, and hidden areas, potentially bringing them into the light and into the open for personal awareness, development, intimacy in community, and overall growth.

The Biblical Johari Window — Walking in the Light
(Based on John 8:32, 1 John 1:7, Psalm 139:23–24, and Romans 12:2)

1. Open Area (Known to self & others) — Walking in the Light Together
• These are the gifts, strengths, and truths you and others both recognize.
• Biblical focus: “Let your light shine before others” (Matthew 5:16)
• Goal: Use these to glorify God and serve others (1 Peter 4:10).
Example: You know you have the gift of encouragement, and others affirm it.

2. Blind Area (Unknown to self, known to others) — Iron Sharpens Iron
• These are your blind spots — patterns, weaknesses, or even hidden strengths others see, but you don’t.
• Biblical focus: “Faithful are the wounds of a friend” (Proverbs 27:6)
• Goal: Invite godly feedback; be teachable (James 1:19–20).
Example: A friend sees you often interrupt others — you didn’t notice until they shared.

3. Hidden Area (Known to self, unknown to others) — Confessing & Being Set Free
• These are private thoughts, struggles, fears, or callings you haven’t shared.
• Biblical focus: “Confess your sins to one another… that you may be healed” (James 5:16)
• Goal: Practice transparency and vulnerability with safe, Spirit-led people (Galatians 6:1–2).
Example: You feel called to missions but haven’t told anyone yet.

4. Unknown Area (Unknown to self & others) — Revealed by the Spirit
• These are gifts, wounds, or callings only God knows, yet to be revealed.
• Biblical focus: “Search me, O God, and know my heart” (Psalm 139:23–24)
• Goal: Seek the Lord’s revelation through prayer, Scripture, fasting, and obedience (Jeremiah 33:3).
Example: You discover a gift for teaching Scripture you didn’t know you had until you served.

Key Principle:
The more we walk in the light (1 John 1:7) and stay connected to the Vine (John 15), the more our Open Area grows — leading to greater intimacy with God and others, deeper self-awareness, and more fruitful Kingdom impact.
